Wisdom Teeth Removal in Plantation FL, and Hollywood FL

Third Molar Extraction in Broward County FL

You’ve been told your teenager needs to have their wisdom teeth removed. And you know this is a common procedure. You’ve heard about wisdom teeth, the extra molars that come in behind the other permanent teeth. But you’re wondering, do they really need to be removed?

With 28 teeth already in place, it’s often difficult for an additional four wisdom teeth to grow in properly. When teeth try to push through the gums but cannot, they remain impacted—fully or partially covered by gum or bone—which has the potential to cause a variety of complications. And 90% of people develop an impacted tooth.

Are You or Your Loved Ones Suffering from Wisdom Tooth Pain?

Call us with any questions or to make an appointment.

Why are they called wisdom teeth?

We develop the third molars during our late teens or early twenties. A person becomes wiser as they transition into adulthood, so that’s why we refer to the third molars as wisdom teeth.

Extraction of wisdom teeth: The Why

Your mouth was designed to hold 28 teeth, and by the time your wisdom teeth start to grow, those 28 slots are already filled, making it difficult for an additional 4 wisdom teeth to grow incorrectly. Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed, but it is important to be evaluated at a young age if possible, to prevent future problems.

BUT, they don’t hurt at all!

Even if there is no pain, there is a huge benefit to removing wisdom teeth preventatively because the problems that can arise are very serious.  It is important for us to make the determination of the risks vs. benefits of wisdom tooth extraction because the older you get, the more there is increased risk, delayed healing, and more difficult recovery.

Even if your wisdom teeth come in properly positioned, they could become infected and at risk for pathologic cysts.

Wisdom Teeth Presentation

To provide you with a better understanding of wisdom teeth, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to wisdom teeth are discussed.

Wisdom Teeth Presentation

Wisdom Teeth Examination

With an oral examination and x-rays of the mouth, Dr. Berley, Dr. Torres & Dr. Berenstein can evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth and predict if there are present or future potential problems. Studies have shown that early evaluation and treatment result in a superior outcome for the patient. Patients are generally first evaluated in the mid-teenage years by their dentist, orthodontist, or by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Timing is Everything

If you’re wondering why you continue to hear about teens and young adults having their wisdom teeth pulled, it’s because there is an optimal (yet fleeting) opportunity between the ages of 16-28 when the tooth roots haven’t fully formed yet. Once the roots have developed, the risk of nerve injury or sinus exposure is significantly higher, and the damage is done. So, it is better in many cases to get them out before any damage to your other teeth can occur.

Minimally invasive surgery leads to rapid healing.

Plantation Oral Surgery is known for the techniques we use that make our wisdom teeth removal procedures less invasive than most. We use a special technique that takes time to perfect and dedication and care to employ, and is, therefore, very rarely used by most providers. We use very advanced equipment and specialized instruments that allow us to access your teeth and gums at a precise angle to avoid the need for a big incision or much bone removal.

All outpatient surgery is performed under appropriate anesthesia to maximize patient comfort. Dr. Berley, Dr. Torres & Dr. Berenstein is trained, licensed, and highly experienced in providing various types of anesthesia for patients.

The result is fast healing and little-to-no pain and swelling.

Non-Opioid, Long-Lasting Pain Relief

When it comes to treating patients, and especially teens, we place a high value on reducing the need for opioids while controlling postsurgical pain. Our method is simple— minimally invasive surgery—AND we treat our patients with a new medication called Exparel.

As frontrunners in oral surgery with years of training under our belt, we know that the best way to provide expert care for your teens is to stay ahead of the curve regarding the avoidance of narcotics. Exparel is a medicine that numbs the surgery site and keeps it numb for 2-3 days. In other words, your child will likely need only ibuprofen to manage any discomfort during recovery.

Possible Complications

If you’re wondering what the risks of wisdom teeth removal surgery might be, there are few. As with any surgical procedure, complications, such as nerve injuries, sinus exposures, dry socket, and  TMJ pain, can occur, but they are very rare. And, if the surgery is performed at an early age, the risk is even lower.

The Cost of Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Every patient is unique, so the cost of your teen’s wisdom teeth extraction depends on a variety of factors, ranging from positioning, level of impaction, number of teeth, etc. Our staff discusses all costs upfront and helps navigate insurance policies and any benefits they provide.  At your consult, you will get an itemized estimate showing your insurance coverage and your out-of-pocket portion.

The Cost of Waiting

The longer you wait, the more likely you’ll run up against problems down the road. And the more complicated the issue, the more expensive the procedure. Simply put, waiting may cost you more in the long run. Wisdom teeth that are left alone tend to lead to difficulties, such as infection, pain, damage to neighboring teeth, and, in rare circumstances, cysts and tumors.

Our services are provided in an environment of optimum safety. We utilize modern monitoring equipment and our staff is experienced in anesthesia techniques.

This was the most wonderful experience! If you have to have a tooth (or teeth) pulled and need tender loving care with it, this is your place - from beginning to end! The front staff are wonderful, Kelly talked me through the aftercare, before the procedure so I knew exactly what to expect afterwards and for the rest of the dayl Bettie was incredibly nurturing throughout the extraction process. As for Dr. Berley - I just can't speak highly enough of him - just super! He explained exactly what he was going to do, and, before the actual extraction, while I was there, he consulted with my dentist to discuss the subsequent treatment plan for replacement. The extraction itself was quick and, of course, painless - I couldn't believe how quick! It was all over before I knew it! I love this office! Caryl M.

I have a horrible fear of going to the dentist. My husband came with me to give me support. I was planning on one extraction although I had 2 teeth that could not be saved. Knowing my anxiety was very high, as a team we decided that sedation would be the best decision. I can't begin to say how easy the procedure went. The staff was amazing and followed up with a phone call to see how I was healing. I would definitely recommend this practice over and over again!

I went to my dentist with a tooth ache and was told I needed wisdom teeth removed and was referred to Dr. Berley. I was concerned because I was slated to go out of the country just a few days later and I wasn't sure if I could have the procedure done in time. I called the office and expressed my concern about the timing and was told he would squeeze me in that day! Everything after that point was hands down the absolute best experience I have ever had at a doctor's office! Dr. Berley and his staff were informative, friendly and were constantly ensuring I was comfortable and out of pain the entire time. They even asked me if they could play music during the procedure and wanted me to be happy with the playlist!! Who does that?? Dr. Berley and his staff are consummate professionals with impeccable bedside manner and are clearly experts in CMF and oral surgical care...not to mention they use the latest technology in the industry and offer a range of pain management options that obviate the need for narcotics (if you so desire...and I did). I can't speak more highly of Dr. Berley and this office. If you have any hesitations whatsoever, just know your concerns will be instantly allayed when you walk through their door. Thank you Dr. Berley and staff!!

Five stars is not enough for Dr. Berley and his staff. I have never been to a more friendly and professional office. Dr. Berley extracted the roots of a tooth which fractured in another office during a bridge removal. He also did bone graft for an implant. This whole procedure was completely painless. I am also choosing him to do the implant. I am so happy my regular dentist sent me to Dr. Berley. I am even looking forward to the implant!!!

There's not enough good that I can say about Dr. Berley! The mere remembrance of the most excellent care my multiple disabled son received from Dr. Berley, along with his entire staff, yet brings tears of utmost appreciation to my eyes and warmth to my heart! As near any parent of a child who suffers from Autism knows, seeing a new doctor in an unfamiliar environment can be quite stressful, for both parent and child. One never knows what sight or sound or sensation might cause an Autistic child to "melt down", and when Autism is accompanied by Down Syndrome as well as a continuing cardiac anomaly, the odds of experiencing such a meltdown are tripled, especially if the attending physician and staff are not familiar or well experienced with such children, most of whom, I find, instinctively know or sense when they are truly cared about, and being cared for. From beginning to end then - from the initial exam to the procedure itself, and thereafter recovery, Dr. Berley managed my son with such kid gloves, immediately winning his trust, and such expertise that the entire process of surgically extracting 5 teeth - four wisdom teeth that had not yet erupted, along with a tooth that grew out of place, went off without a hitch, and with so little discomfort thereafter that he was begging for pizza and burgers within hours of the surgery! But of course, he had to content himself with jello and ice cream. Patient care received went beyond excellent. Swelling was minimal. There was little pain during recovery that OTC Motrin didn't handle. Bleeding was next to nil, within but a few short hours, and recovery has been uneventful; as importantly as that, my son was given no reason to fear going back to the dentist again, which says a whole lot more than I ever could. Thank you Dr. Berley, and staff, for your knowledge, your compassion, your dedication to patient care and comfort. I cannot possibly thank you enough; nor can negate to mention Dr. Dee, LaDilia Trifunovic , whom I slso absolutely adore and trust with my most precious son's life, who so helped to make all of this possible. I owe you an non-payable debl of gratitude.

DR BERLEY & HIS TEAM ARE THE BEST OF THE BEST!!! I was introduced to this office a few months ago as an intern while I was still in the dental assisting program. It was my first oral surgery experience and I absolutely loved it! Everybody was truly helpful and friendly, including the doctor who made sure I understood everything that was going on in his office (IV sedation, implants, etc.). As a student I had the opportunity to experience different specialties and different offices and I was able to compare and distinguish the doctor who truly stood out as a professional but also as a person: Dr Berley is definitely the winner! I loved his office so much that immediately after my graduation I went back to apply for a job as an assistant and they accepted me with no hesitation. Nothing can go wrong here: Dr Berley has a lot of experience and treats all his patients as if they are part of his family; also his excellent educational background is what encourages him to adopt a minimally invasive technique for all his surgeries, which totally helps patients with healing. The front desk girls are very devoted and the office manager (Pam) would go above and beyond to provide care for the patients. Pam’s encouragement makes me feel so positive, I can do anything and everything. The assistants (Marilu & Jules) are the most skillful, caring and responsible people in the entire world!!! Jules’ expert tutelage as an anesthesia assistant is making me rethink my direction in the dental field! And last but not least, they give the best post op instructions ever!! I am sure the patients would agree with me. I totally trust them: as an employee and as a patient too. As a matter of fact, not too long ago I was complaining of a terrible headache and Doctor Berley recommended having my wisdom teeth removed. He took out my wisdom teeth in a blink of an eye and I felt no pain whatsoever; I was even able to keep working that same day. Sure enough my headache disappeared completely and I can only be extremely thankful for that. If you ever need an oral surgeon, you have to come here. You will not regret it! It is a guarantee you will receive maximum care & that is what matters the most!

Honestly, I've had 1 wisdom tooth extracted last October by a dentist and it was the most painful experience. This year, I was recommended to Dr. Berley, let me tell you that it was such a relief! His staff from Pam at the front desk, they are very warm and they make you feel at home. Then when it was time for the procedure which was last month 07/01/16, I was really nervous, his assistant was super nice to me and even Dr. Berley helped calm my nerves. It was such a wonderful experience and I am forever grateful to Dr. Berley and his staff. They called me before my wisdom tooth extraction, they called me the same day I had it to check on me and it was so amazing. I barely got any swelling, Dr Berley has hands of an angel. I am so lucky and I have recommended all my colleagues and people I know to him always! Thank you guys so much 🙂

Dr. Berley and his staff went above and beyond for me. I traveled from Boca and they were kind enough to squeeze me in for an extraction the same day so I did not have to find a ride back again the next week. They worked around MY schedule- which is almost unheard of these days. The doctor had a gentle touch and I would definitely recommend him. I will be having him do my implant in a few months and I know he will do a wonderful job.

I had a wisdom tooth extraction. Not my first one, thus I went trembling and embracing myself for pain and uncomfort during and after the procedure. When Dr. Berley informed me after few minutes that we are done, I had no idea that he was already working on my tooth. I thought he was just checking to see if i was numb enough so he could start. One of my best if not the best experiences in dental work...and I have quite some...you name it and I have it. Dr. berley will be my and my family's oral surgeon from now on, and I will definitely strongly recommend him to all of my friends. All of the stuff also very friendly and his nurse ( I am sorry I do not remember her name) made everything possible to make me feel comfortable, even stroking my head, explaining every move or gadget that was entering in my mouth and at the end explained and demonstrated for me in length and detail how to take care of my wound afterwards. Thank you all! Moira K.
